How long have you been practicing?
I have been practicing yoga for 15 years.
What keeps you returning to your mat?
I keep returning to my mat because, simply put, I love Yoga. It really is that simple. I was hooked from the very first time I stepped onto a mat, and I still experience that feeling today, 15 years later. Its about quality of life, and to this day, I’ll be in, say, a Downward Dog and think, “God, I love this stuff!”
My favorite pose is actually a series of poses: Surya Namaskars/Sun Salutations. Everything you need, everything you’re looking for in Yoga is right there in Suns: movement, breath, mobility, heat, mindfulness, intention, connection, energy. Suns are so everything!
Favorite Mixx class to teach?
My favorite class to teach is both of the types I teach right now: Gentle, for its opportunity to show the quieter side of Yoga, to hopefully demonstrate the more introspective aspect of Yoga; and I love teaching Vinyasa Flow because of all those fabulous Suns!
Most interesting/memorable experience as a teacher?
I can’t think of the most memorable or interesting moment of my teaching experience: at this point, they’re all memorable! A little off track, but the best way to answer this question is to say that the entire teaching experience is interesting – public speaking! All eyes on you! The sense of responsibility! Being pleasantly surprised that your music worked and you didn’t run out of sequences before your hour is up!
Favorite gentle/calming music? Favorite cardio music? Favorite music to flow to?
Music: Beatles, Beatles, Beatles. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work for the class you’re teaching, but when I’m asked a music question, the answer is always The Beatles.
Best savasana relaxation tip?
My best Savasana tip is to not over-explain the process. Let students simply experience and utilize the moment for their personal needs. They innately know what to do, I think. That said, I always enjoy how other teachers express Savasana…I’ve NEVER had a bad Savasana experience!
Favorite essential oil to use in class AND/OR personally?
Lemon oil for its effervescence, Rosemary oil for its earthiness, Lavender Oil for its calmness.
Favorite place to practice?
My favorite place to practice yoga is an extra room in my house, very, very late at night.
Describe your teaching style in three words.
Student For Life.
What sets Mixx apart from other studios?
Mixx sets ITSELF apart. It’s the human connection fostered between Teacher and Student, and Student to Student. And it all starts at the top.
Any advice for beginners?
Patience. Take your time.
My hometown is Tucson, Arizona
I have two favorite quotes, and depending on your perspective they either have nothing to do with each other, or they dovetail each other quite nicely, I think:
- “Reality will always find you.” (don’t know who I first heard this from…someone wise, I think…);
2. “Reality leaves a lot to the imagination.” (John Lennon)
If you could eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you want with you?
- My knitting bag 2. My Beatles albums 3. My yoga mat (has a lot of practical uses!)
